In this era of superbugs, natural antibiotics like
garlic and other herbs and spices have an increasing role to play in fighting bacteria associated with infectious diseases. We read in another article about the harm of pharmaceutical, or un- natural antibiotics.
The overuse and misuse of these drugs have given rise to "super-germs" that are resistant to even the most powerful drugs.
This comes from taking antibiotics for the wrong reasons,
such as for colds and the flu that are linked to viruses, not bacteria. It also arises from not completing a prescribed course
of antibiotics, taking too much antibiotics and other reasons. Yet certain foods and other substances that has antibiotic
properties continue to be effective against these drug-resistant supergerms.
They rarely cause harmful side effects like allergic reactions. In some
cases, allergic reactions do occur, but these are much rarer than similar reactions caused by antibiotic drugs. And, natural
antibiotics do not wipe out the trillions of friendly bacteria that play a crucial role in immunity. More likely, they also
play a secondary role in stimulating the body's natural immune response.
Garlic
Garlic is by far the best known among natural antibiotics. It has long been proven to destory harmful viruses,
bacterial, fungi and parasites. The active compound in garlic is allicin, which is similar to penicillin - the first antibiotic.
(Here, it is worth noting that the early antibiotics, like
penicillin which was discovered in 1928, were also natural medicines. Penicillin was derived from the penicillium fungi and
even though it is known to cause allergic reactions, it is relatively safe. Newer antibiotics are mainly synthetically produced.
They tend to be more powerful and so they also tend to cause more powerful side effects.)
One of the good things about garlic is that is works against a broad spectrum
of harmful bacteria. It is the natural equivalent of a "broad spectrum antibiotic". But while modern broad spectrum antibiotics
tend to be very powerful (and costly) drugs that cause serious side effects, garlic is a gentle (and cheap) food that does
its job without producing harmful side effects.
To maximise the natural antibiotic benefits of garlic, it is best to eat it raw. How? In China and Malaysia,
but for some reason not in Singapore, many Chinese restaurants serve finely cut raw garlic as a condiment, in much the same
way as they would serve raw chilli, with soy sauce. And you would dip your meats and other foods in it. Chinese spring rolls
and a Hokkien dialect noodle dish called lor mee also have raw garlic added. The Chinese also eat raw garlic pickled in soy
sauce.
You can also suck raw garlic cloves -
as you would suck a lozenge - by placing them either inside the cheeks or under the tongue. The taste is mild, unlike the
strong pungent effect of biting or chewing raw garlic. In fact, the taste is so mild that I get tempted to bite it - and that
is when some of the pungence emerges!
So
these are some ideas on how to eat raw garlic. But if you dislike the taste, just swallow some down with hot water or hot
soup. Alternatively, garlic oil capsules - sold in health stores - also impart many of the benefits of garlic, including its
properties as natural antibiotics. You can also buy aged garlic supplements and these are said to be particularly effective,
more so than regular garlic capsules.
Cooked
garlic also retains some of the properties of raw garlic, including their properties as natural antibiotics. So use garlic
regularly in your cooking, especially when you are down with infectious diseases like the flu.
Echinacea
Echinacea is a American Indian herb popularly used as in America and Europe to treat sore throats, coughs and
other flu-like symptoms. I do not have personal experience with it, but thought I mention it here because practically every
website that discusses natural antibiotics mention it.
Echinecea is said to work like garlic, fighting bacteria, fungi and viruses and also stimulating
immune function. It is sold in health stores as a liquid medicine, tablet or capsule, as well as a herbal tea. Because of
its popularity, several scientific studies have been done on echinecea, but the results have been inconclusive. Some studies
show that it reduces the severity of colds and flus, while others show that it produces little impact.
Proponents of echinecea do acknowledge that it is no "magic
herb". It is said to be most effective when taken in the early stages of colds and flus and when taken regularly, every few
hours, over several days. They further advise that enchinecea should not be taken for more than 10 days.
Propolis
Propolis is a mixture of natural resins that bees collect from flower buds, plant sap and other
plant sources. They use it not only to seal small gaps in the bee hive, but also to prevent decomposition within the hive.
For example, if a small animal like a lizard enters the hive and dies there, the bees would seal it with propolis - making
it like a mummy - and rendering it harmless and odorless.
Modern research reveals that propolis has the properties of natural antibiotics, anti-virals and
anti-fungi. It also enhances immune function and imparts other health benefits. However, because the composition of propolis
depends on where the bees come from and where they collect the resins, the quality of propolis varies.
Propolis tablets and lozenges are sold at health stores.
I used to take them whenever I had the flu, sore throat or other infections and I found them generally effective.
However, I later grew out of the habit, partly because the
health store where I used to buy propolis from has closed, and partly because I discovered other natural antibiotics that,
for some reason, I relate better to. One of these is... "Umeboshi"
Umeboshi
Of all natural antibiotics, this pickled sour plum has been my favourite since I learnt about it nearly 20
years ago, through macrobiotics. For one thing, it appears to me more as a real, natural food as opposed to, propolis which
comes in the form of a tablet or lozenge. The other reason is that, besides fighting infectious diseases as natural antibiotics,
anti-virals, anti-parasites, etc, umeboshi has lots more medical properties and it is claimed to help over a hundred different
illnesses.
This may seem far-fetched, but one of
its chief properties is that it has strong alkalinising properties. It makes the body environment more alkaline. And since
most disease condtions arise from the body becoming over-acidic, umeboshi is able to counter these conditions. It is not so
far-fetched after all.
Olive leaf extracts
In recent years, olive leaf and olive leaf extracts (OLE) have become popular
health supplements. They are said to be powerful antioxidants, with one 2005 study by Dr L Stevenson of Southern Cross University,
Australia, reporting it to be twice as powerful an antioxidant as green tea and four times more powerful than Vitamin C. And
yes, olive leaf extracts are also claimed to enhance immune function and act as natural antibiotics - and also

Niacin (vitamin B3) is an essential
vitamin found in many foods. The human body uses niacin in more than 50 chemical reactions. Niacin works in the body to dilate
capillaries causing an increase of blood flow to the peripheries. Niacin is a vital precursor for the coenzymes that supply
energy to body cells. This important vitamin is also needed for the synthesis of the sex hormones.
Vitamin E (as d-Alpha Tocopheryl
Succinate):
Vitamin
E protects cell membranes. It protects unsaturated fatty acids from attack by oxygen and oxidation to combat the spread of
free radicals. It is not destroyed by these antioxidant processes (like Vitamin C) and functions repeatedly. Vitamin E creates
a barrier against air pollutants and defends against cell damage. It's antioxidant protection may help prevent cancer, heart
disease, stroke, reduce bad cholesterol, and prevent blood clots. Vitamin E improves immune function and slows the aging process.
Hawthorn (as Crataegus pinnatifida)(fruit):
Hawthorn is rich in bioflavonoids,
which relax and dilate the arteries. These compounds are powerful antioxidants that help increase the flow of blood and oxygen
to the heart. This reduces the work required by the heart to circulate blood, and in- turn this reduces blood pressure and
stress to the heart muscle. The bioflavonoid substances in Hawthorn give strength to the walls of blood vessels and improve
blood flow to other areas of the body.
Is an aphrodisiac that increases libido in men and women,
and improves erectile function in men. Known also as Epimedium, horny goat weed was first described in ancient classical Chinese
medicinal texts. Today, horny goat weed holds an important place in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is gaining popularity
around the world.
Catuaba (as Erythroxylum catuaba)(bark):
Catuaba has a long history in herbal medicine as an aphrodisiac. People
have used Catuaba for generations and it is the most famous of all Brazilian aphrodisiaca plants. Native to Brazil and parts
of the Amazon, Catuaba is a central nervous system stimulant commonly used throughout the world for treating sexual impotence,
exhaustion and fatigue.
Saw Palmetto (as Serenoa repens)(fruit):
Saw Palmetto is an old American tonic, dating back to the Maya Indians
and is used in love potions. Used throughout Europe as one form of treatment for benign enlarged prostate, saw palmetto may
also have benefits as a natural aphrodisiac. It is commonly used in remedies designed to increase sex drive and promote general
health of the reproductive organs
Muira Puama (as Ptychopetalum olacoides)(root):
Is a highly-regarded sexual stimulant with a reputation
as a powerful aphrodisiac. It has been used for improving libido and treating erectile dysfunction.
Ginkgo (as Ginkgo biloba)(leaf)
:
For
over 5,000 years Ginkgo has been prescribed in Chinese herbal medicine. Ginkgo is known for increasing blood flow to the brain,
which may help energize the brain and central nervous system. Ginkgo improves peripheral circulation, oxygenation, and increases
blood flow to the genitals to improve sexual function and the power of your erection.
Chinese Ginseng (as Panax Ginseng)(root):
Is traditionally used to overcome
general weakness and deliver extra energy. It also has demonstrated aphrodisiac powers. Used to combat impotence, infertility,
and premature ejaculation, it normalizes blood pressure while rejuvenating and revitalizing the body. It also promotes the
growth of nerve tissue. A key ingredient of ginseng is ginsenoside, which alters blood flow to the brain and penis and can
build blood and sperm. Russian scientists have demonstrated that ginseng stimulates both physical and mental activity, enhances
athletic performance and has a positive effect on the sex glands.
Damiana (as Turnera diffusa)(leaf):
Has been held in great esteem
as an aphrodisiac since ancient times. Its popularity has remained strong over the course of the centuries, particularly in
Mexico. It was first used ritually by the Aztecs as a sexual stimulant for men and women. Medicinal uses include treating
sterility, impotence, and sexual imbalances.
Inosine:
Is used by athletes and those who want to improve performance.
Tribulus (as Tribulus terrestris):
Tribulus Terrestris Extract is
a natural herbal ingredient that may help increase levels of testosterone by increasing the body's production of luteinizing
hormone (LH) levels.
Cayenne Fruit (as Capsicum species)(fruit):
Cayenne stimulates blood flow by strengthening the heart, capillaries,
and nerves. It is a mild pain reliever that has been used as a medicine for centuries

The common herb that’s probably sitting in every spice cabinet
right now, has the power to stop an in-progress heart attack?
It’s true. This fiery herb
– known to most as a spice – has been shown to stop a heart attack in as little as 3 minutes after taking it.
Cayenne
pepper (Capsicum annuum)
Medical practitioners both ancient and contemporary have touted the medicinal
properties of cayenne as well as a variety of hot peppers (including bird, chili, and Tabasco) due to their high content of
capsaicin. Capsaicin is one of seven capsaicinoid compounds present in peppers, and is the primary compound responsible for
the hot sensation of the pepper fruit, as well as its medicinal benefits.
It has long been
claimed that cayenne, due to its high capsaicin content, is useful in stopping a heart attack in under three minutes, without
damaging the heart muscle. A similar claim is made of capsaicin’s ability to abort an in-progress stroke.
A
late pioneer herbalist Dr. John Christopher recommends a glass of cayenne tea be given every 15 minutes until the medical
crisis "heart attack passes". Also, it is said that a teaspoon of cayenne tincture (Google: Christopher’s Original Formula
Cayenne Extract) every 15 minutes is equally effective. An old MD buddy of mine also suggest; "less than 1/5th tea-spoon of
cayenne in your favorite hot tea.
He also says; its good for a (fast-fix) from bronchitis- but,
goes on to say; have a 3-4 oz glass of milk handy & ready as a "chaser...
Delta brainwaves
(3 - 0,5 Hz) are the brainwaves of the lowest frequency and represent the unconscious. If we only produce delta we will find
us in dreamless deep sleep, but we also see delta in various combinations with other brainwaves. They may then represent intuition,
curiosity, a kind of radar, hunches or a "feeling" for situations and other people. Delta is often seen with people who work
in therapeutic environments or professions and with people who have had traumatic experiences and have developed a "radar"
for difficult situations.
Gamma brainwaves (100 - 38 Hz) were detected later than the other brainwaves, less is known about
them so far. They have been seen in states of peak performance (both physical and mental), high focus and concentration and
during mystic and transzendental experiences. A lot of research is currently being done on gamma brainwaves in the 40 Hz range
during meditation. One of the characteristics of gamma waves is a synchronisation of activity over wide areas of the brain.
Alpha brainwaves (14 - 8
Hz) are seen when we are in a relaxed state, daydreaming or visualizing ("sensualzing" seems to be more appropriate as imagination
in all senses - hearing, kinaestetic, smell, taste etc. - stimulates alpha waves. Your visual sense may not nessariliy be
the strongest for you. Some people rather feel an inner knowing). We need alpha waves as the bridge to the lower frequencies
ot the subconscious (theta), if we want to remember the content of our dreams or our meditation, or if we want to retrieve
information from our subconscious. For this reason alpha is especially important in combination with other brainwaves

Below are some simple techniques
you can start using today. As simple as they are- they prove to be more powerful than "wishful thinking. It isnt rocket-science
folks- but with practice always comes "improvment of quality."
1. Repeating Affirmations
This can be done in your mind or spoken aloud, but
it is essential to repeat the positive affirmations everyday. This can be done ideally in the morning or right before bedtime,
as it allows the subconscious to continue working on it even whilst you are sleeping.
2. Write down your Affirmations
By writing down your affirmations,
it is a reinforcement process that forces your mind to focus on it. By imprinting the importance of these affirmations in
your subconscious, you are allowing it to be accepted and acted upon. It is also useful to leave the list in prominent areas
such as your work space so that you are constantly reminded of those positive thoughts you wish to ingrain within your-self.
3. Listening to a self-recorded
tape
Over time, you will find
that it is more than sufficient & more benificial to listen to your own voice repeating those affirmations. It will then
be less important to consciously think of your positive affirmations.
4. Someone you Admire
Pick out traits that you
admire, or even a person whom you wish to emulate. Identify what characteristics you are aiming towards, and include them
in your positive affirmations. This will give you a concrete goal to work towards.
The subconscious mind is a powerful tool that can
work both ways if not properly trained. Once you decide on a path of action, the subconscious mind will guide you through
it to achieve your end goal, manifested by the communication between the conscious and the subconscious mind.
